Login Explanation, Single Sign-On and Security
Login via single sign-on (SSO) provides the advantage of moving freely between restricted information on multiple websites without having to login or logout from individual sites. It also opens the possibility to search the restricted information across multiple sites as a contiguous resource.
It is your responsibility to understand the sign-on procedure and the precautions to exercise.
One Website:
-
If you have access to one website only “login” simply provides you with access to the information on that website restricted by the access control. While logged in your browser will display the restricted content to which you have access rights. Exercise the usual precautions to prevent access by unauthorised individuals to your browser session. The session will timeout after a period of inactivity (30 minutes). “Logout” removes access to the restricted information.
Two or more Websites:
-
If you have access to two or more websites “login” is a single sign-on (SSO) process and provides you with access to the information on each website restricted by the access control:
-
The website you login to will indicate you are logged in.
-
If you follow a link to an additional website you will appear as not logged in. Restricted content and the menu links to that content initially will not be displayed. If you select the login button the restricted content and the menu links to that content will be displayed immediately. (This is because the original login logged you in to all sites to which you have access. The behaviour described is due to the way session cookies are handled by the web browser.)
-
Note too, that once logged in to one site, then, for example, a bookmark to restricted information on a second site will work and the restricted content will be displayed directly. However, if you have not logged in (via SSO) the same bookmark will not provide access and will normally lead to the login screen being displayed.
-
Exercise the usual precautions to prevent access by unauthorised individuals to your browser session. Note that your browser session provides access to the restricted information on all the websites you have access to under the SSO, even when you have not initiated a tab or a window to that particular website in your browser. The session to all the SSO websites will timeout after a period of inactivity (approximately 6 hours). “Logout” in a tab or window to any one of the websites, removes access to the restricted information on all the sites.
If you have questions about the SSO functionality or are unclear as to which web resources are involved please contact the Webmaster. Note that, each time you register an account for a website covered by the SSO login provisions, you will be advised as to which websites you access via SSO. Websites with a public visibility, for example ESCIES, will be listed on the SSO login page.
